Cub's Journal - March 2009

My 2009 showreel / Video portfolio is up!

Finally, I have enough material to make a full showreel! As part of an effort to be more productive, I have made steps to get my freelance business (Pro Vision Media) off the ground again. so far so good; the website is up and running, the showreel is done, and I should be getting my hands on a new HD video camera soon: The Panasonic HVX-202, which can do full 1080P! *drool*

I guess once I have that all sorted I will finally be able to get more projects underway, as I have been penning out so many ideas over the past few months, but did not have all the gear I wanted to shoot them. So hopefully soon there will be a burst of films coming, including a project which relates to me recent fire tests!

Speaking of which, if there are any script writers out there who would love to have their ideas / short films shot and made into a film please feel free to send them to me and we can have a chat! It's a great opportunity for the writers to see one of their ideas come to life, and a great chance for me to develop further and find new challenges!

Anyway, that's all for now. You can watch the showreel by clicking on the thumb below:

Fire and flames, and a whole lot of testing...

Good news is, things are finally in motion with a couple of new projects. By in motion I mean; I was able to drag myself away from the Playstation and DVDs and get to work on some CG tests.

Pretty isn't it? It's a flame animation test, done entirely on the computer using 3D Studio Max. It is part of an upcoming project and was testing the fire for various effects, such as explosions, flares and other forms of pseudo-realistic pyrotechnics!!

I was up till 8am one morning rendering a few of these and caught the most amazing sunrise from the window... will post pics tomorrow.

In the meantime, there is nothing much else to report. So adieu for today!

Sydney Flash Mob!!

Well for those of you who saw the Improv Everywhere freeze in Grand Central station, you will know exactly what I'm talking about. Myself (along with 2 other friends) decided to host a similar event here in Sydney. Why? ...well why not!

We managed to get over 2,200 participants in the event which was spread predominantly via Facebook. In fact I was so active on Facebook during the lead-up that shortly afterwards I had my account temporarily disabled for apparent spamming! LOL!

Anyway, the event was a huge success and I have upload a video which I cut together from all the different camera angles we had on the day. Click the link below to see the film here at DA and leave your thoughts!

Cub's Journal - October 2008

Happy 1st Birthday DA Film!

Well unfortuantely I don't have any new films to upload to help celebrate this mementos occasion. I have however updated my journal design to incorporate some DA Film related imagery!

Also, for those of you who are into the flicks or have some of your own, get active and lets see them! If you don't have any but would like to make some films then pick up that camera and start shooting!

In terms of projects on the horizon; I am still writing my 90 minute feature, and plan on writing a few more in the near future... but in the meantime I plan on getting some friends together to shoot some shorts to keep me busy. I hope to buy a new camera soon (hopefully a Panasonic P2 model, perhaps the HVX-200 which was the one we used on Masque) along with a copy of the Adobe CS4 Master Suite... I guess it's back to saving!

Anyway, thanks again for tuning in and for your support!

A few older films now in the gallery

You might have notices two of my older projects "The Maltese Falcon" and "Under a Phobos Lit Sky" in my gallery. I created these both during my first couple of years at Uni.

Under a Phobos Lit Sky was created for an assignment where the brief was to make a short noir film. Being the ambitious person that I would like to think I am I pitched the idea of doing it not in the 1940's, but the 2040s... and on Mars! Naturally my lecturer was skeptical of the idea, but in the end I am happy with the end result. It was also my first serious tinker with 3D animation, plus a good chance to practice my compositing skills.

And the Maltese Falcon brief involved using a different approach to shooting the opening scene from the original film. We decided to go a little artistic with this one and sketch all the backgrounds by hand, while filming the actors in front of a green screen and compositing them over the backdrops. The effect was pretty cool... but the compositing is a little muddy because we shot on 16mm film, and the telecine was a little rough around the edges. But it turned out to be one of the more unique approaches for the assignment.

...and in my personal life?

I am moving to a place with my girlfriend. She and I decided it was time to gain a little more independence and so we are moving out together next weekend! WE have hired a big ass truck to haul all our stuff around that weekend and apparently I have to drive it, which will be interesting. The good news is the place has a wonderful ocean view so I can probably start taking some nice sunrise shots!

Also, I am currently writing a 90 minute feature film, so I might be able to finish the script now that I will have more time.

Anyway, wish me luck!

Oh... and a quick note to all my watchers!

Thank you so much for supporting me, and viewing my work and journal entries, and leaving comments! I know I am probably not one of those members who gets a zillion hits a day, but I do my best and am really happy when you guys show your support. I will endeavor to keep the works coming, and hopefully will be able to be more productive in the new place!

Masque finally uploaded to Deviant Film!

Well, my short film 'The Masque of the Red Death' has finally been uploaded onto Deviant Film. Check it out!!!

I hope you all like it. It has taken almost 2 years to make and I hope to distribute it to some international festivals soon!

Let me know what you think... and wish me luck!

Update!

I am so happy!!

Masque received a DD on Friday 18th April! :w00t:

I guess this is a chance for me to thank everyone for their comments and support!! I never expected such a reaction so thank you for all the kind words, viewings and favorites! This is probably my most successful DA submission, so I guess I should stick with film because my photos ain't doing so well. lol!

I have so far submitted the film into 4 festivals (it cost over $250 to do so!)... Two in the USA, one here in Sydney, and one in Tokyo! So fingers crossed for those. I plan to submit to other festivals each month, as I cannot afford to do more this month.

If anyone is interested I might upload a short making-of clip in an effort of help answer some of the questions asked in regards to the production.

But in the meantime here are some answers to some questions already asked:

Q: How much did it cost?

A: It cost me around $8,000 all up. I saved up for half, and borrowed the other half, but worked my butt off to pay it back, which I did within a few months.

Q: What software did you use?

A: It was edited on a PowerMac G5 using Final Cut Pro. Colour graded on PC using Premiere Pro CS3. Credits sequences were done on PC using Adobe After Effects. Sound and Music was mixed on PC using Cubase SX-3.

If there are any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Journal Overhaul!

After seeing so many pretty Journals, I figured it was high time to try my hand at one. I plucked one from the DA gallery for the time being, but might customise my own when I have time. Although the BG is is Sydney (where I live) so it is very fitting come to think of it!

My film is DONE!!

Tue Feb 5, 2008, 4:15 AM
At long last!

Well, the good news is: this film I have been gas-bagging about for so long has finially finished! :w00t:

The Masque of the Red Death is now ready for the festivals, and more importantly... DeviantFilm!

For those of you who don't know, I did a short film adaptation opf Edgar Allan Poe's sort story of the same title for my Uni assessment at the end of 2006, and since then it has been evolving into something I can submit into festivals worldwide in the hopes of getting some well deserved recognition for all those involved in the production.

I am screening the film here in Sydney on March 13th at the Chauvel Cinemas, if anyone in the area is interested in coming. For those who cannot make it, I am sure I will be posting it here on DeviantFilm some time soon.

In the meantime, here is a short trailer for the film I whipped up: [link]

Hope you all like it! Once the film goes online please check it out! In the meantime, any comments about the trailer will be welcome!

That's all for now. Goodnight.
